Trauma Therapy for Gay Men
Healing in a Space That Understands You in Chicago or Virtually Across Los Angeles, the rest of California, and Illinois
For many gay men, trauma doesn’t always come from a single event—it’s woven into the fabric of growing up in a world that wasn’t always safe to be fully seen. Whether it’s childhood emotional neglect, bullying, religious shame, family rejection, or the chronic stress of having to monitor how “acceptable” you seemed, these experiences can leave a deep imprint on your nervous system, your sense of self, and your relationships.
At Chris Peters Psychotherapy, we offer therapy that is LGBTQ+ affirming, body-based, and grounded in deep respect for each client’s unique path. We work with gay men in Chicago in person and virtually in Los Angeles and the rest of California, helping them move through old wounds and into more authentic connection—with themselves and others.

Why Trauma Therapy Matters for Gay Men
For many gay men, trauma isn’t just about one major life event—it’s the accumulation of experiences that chip away at safety, worth, and connection. These may include childhood rejection, bullying, religious shame, breakups, family estrangement, or simply growing up in a world where being yourself felt unsafe.
Misinterpreted often are the symptoms that show up as a result of traumatic experiences. Instead of understanding them, often we are taught to ignore them (anxiety or depression) or they may be validated by the world around us so we continue doing them. Let's look at something that the world validates and is common among gay men -- a beautiful physique. In the world others may see you as gorgeous and even tell you how good you look, so you keep working harder. However, the feelings of "not being good enough" underneath aren't being addressed, and no matter how muscular, slim, or "perfect" you look, you still feel shame. I'm not here to take away your physique, but I am here to help you feel motivated by something other than shame -- by working on the trauma underneath.
In my work as a trauma therapist, I’ve supported gay men navigating:
-
Deep-rooted shame or emotional disconnection
-
Intimacy challenges, avoidance, or over-attachment
-
Chronic anxiety, overthinking, or difficulty relaxing
-
Grief around identity, relationships, or loss of time
-
Internalized homophobia or fear of being "too much"
-
Difficulty trusting or showing up authentically in relationships
-
Substance abuse or other addictions
These experiences may not always look like “trauma” in the traditional sense—but they live in the body and nervous system. Trauma therapy helps untangle those emotional knots, regulate the body, and restore connection.
A Body-Focused, LGBTQ+ Affirming Approach to Healing
At Chris Peters Psychotherapy, trauma therapy goes beyond talking—it’s about coming home to yourself. Using a somatic and relational approach, I help clients not just understand their past, but feel safer in the present.
My work is grounded in:
-
EMDR to process painful memories without getting stuck in them
-
IFS (Internal Family Systems) to explore and care for the parts of you that hold pain, fear, or protection
-
Somatic therapy to track how trauma lives in the body and gently release it
-
Attachment-based work to build trust, safety, and emotional intimacy
Therapy is collaborative and paced to your needs. You don’t have to explain yourself or translate your experience—I meet you where you are, as you are.
Why Chicago and Los Angeles Gay Men Choose Affirming Trauma Therapy
Living in a vibrant but fast-moving city like Chicago or Los Angeles can create extra pressure to appear successful, connected, and “together.” Many gay men I work with feel isolated despite busy lives, or burned out from constantly trying to prove their worth.
Affirming trauma therapy offers a place to slow down, reflect, and heal. Whether you’re processing the past, struggling with your body or identity, or just feeling stuck—therapy can help you:
-
Feel less anxious and more grounded
-
Navigate dating and relationships with clarity
-
Reconnect with your body in a kinder, more embodied way
-
Heal wounds from rejection, shame, or identity suppression
-
Build secure, fulfilling connections with yourself and others
